During my residency at The Columbia I wrote poems inspired by conversations with each artist in residence. This poem came to me while I was playing hide and seek with my son in the garden. He was hiding behind a bush and I was looking at him through the leaves which made me think of a kaleidoscope. My son who inspired me to start writing in the first place, who made me realise I could create by creating him.

I saw you

through the kaleidoscope of the bush

you said

come in

I said

I am too big

I will make space, you said,

come, Mummy,

play with me

in the tree

So I went into the bush

became a child like you

a child in the blue

hiding behind a bush

on the other side

of the kaleidoscope
