Layers of Time

This poem was written during my residency at The Columbia in partnership with Roman Road and was inspired by conversations with resident artist Shaqúelle Whyte.

Shaqúelle Whyte, They said to wait, 2020

I lay myself

in layers of time and paint

I lay myself

in other people’s features

and in them

I see my accumulated experience

Emotions I am still trying to make sense of

to understand

I turn the abstract into the figurative

and even though the figures don’t move

they are still

time has worked on them

the past, present and future can be seen on them

Through them

Through me

You can never know another

Not what they think or dream

You can only know yourself
